I’ve read a number of books by Daniel Silva and this is his best so far. His characters are interesting and well-defined and the plot moves along quickly and smoothly. He is also adept at describing the details of various geographic locations throughout the world, something the well-traveled reader will greatly appreciate. Silva was raised Catholic but converted to Judaism when he married so he is well qualified to write about activities at the Vatican as well as Allon’s headquarters on Tel Aviv’s King Saul Boulevard.
It was an enjoyable and satisfying read. I have several more books by Silva on my “to read” list.

The Messenger Gabriel Allon Series Book 6 edition by Daniel Silva Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
One has become attached to the character of Gabriel Allon, the unlikely and reluctant spy and assassin. The scenarios that Daniel
Silva paints are so relevant to today’s world that one believes it may be a fictionalised account of real life events. In The Messenger, Gabriel is out to real up a Saudi sponsored terrorist network - by cutting its head.
Having read most of the the Allon series, there is a sense of deja vu at times and one wonders whether one has read this book earlier. A good read nevertheless.
Like many spy novel fans, I have long considered John le Carré the master of the genré. But, Daniel Silva has surpassed even le Carré in my opinion. My wife agrees. She and I are almost finished reading all of Silva's Gabriel Allon series and we would give 5 stars to all of them. The first of Silva's novels I read was one of his most recent. I was so impressed with his writing that I wondered if his skills had improved during the more than twenty years he's been a spy novelist. Nope! His first was also superb! If you like spy novels with a LOT of verisimilitude, I think you'll love Silva's work.
The Messenger has more suspense than all its predecessors in the series combined; I confess I was on the verge of biting my nails when Sarah Bancroft was on Zizi’s entourage because his security personnel didn’t allow her to wander off without them and they were always making those edgy threats that curdle the blood.
Even though the book is great, the first part titled “The Door of Death” referring to a door in St Peter’s Basilica, feels somewhat disconnected from everything that happens after. It is that after the investigation took flight I almost forgot that an attack in the Vatican had taken place.
The character of Zizi al-Bakari is the father of Nadia al-Bakari, the woman with “impeccable jihadist credentials” at the center of the installment Portrait of a Spy.
So many things happen in The Messenger, one of them being an attempt on Ari Shamron’s life. It was heartbreaking for me because, together with Gabriel and Julian, Ari is my most favorite character in the series. Thank God “he is eternal” as they all so often say. Another important sub-plot is that Gabriel’s cover is blown for good so he can’t accept to head Special Operations, and finally he gathers the courage to tell Leah that he is in love with Chiara and wants to marry her.
In summary, nail-biting suspense and international intrigue of the highest order are the hallmarks of The Messenger.
Daniel Silva has written some excellent espionage/covert ops books in the Gabriel Allon series and this is one of his best. Gabriel Allon is one of the most fascinating characters in modern espionage fiction. He operates in two quite distinct worlds, that of a world renowned art restorer and that of a senior operative of Israel's Security Intelligence Service - "the Office". He is a skilled artist in both worlds, one very gentle and the other, while still very skilled, at times can be very violent.
Allon is once again pulled out of retirement with news that jihad bombers may be targeting the Vatican. This sets Gabriel and his team from the Office on a chase to find the mastermind for the bombers, thought to be Ahmed bin Shafiq, a former chief of a clandestine Saudi intelligence unit, who has set up his own "Jihad Incorporated" organisation,. They believe that bin Shafiq has been bankrolled by Saudi billionaire Abdul Aziz al-Bakari, better known just as Zizi, who is known for his expensive tastes especially for his valuable collection of Impressionist paintings.
Gabriel plans to infiltrate Zizi's entourage by using a missing Impressionist painting as bait, and hopefully identify bin Shafiq who has not been seen for years. To do this he needs to find someone to deliver the bait and goes to Adrian Carter, a top CIA operative. for help. Carter is a very old school spook and generates my favourite quote of the book "According to office wits (at the CIA) Carter left chalk marks on the bedpost when he wanted to make love to his wife". Carter finds beautiful and very brave art expert Sarah Bancroft to set the bait.
The action moves from Jerusalem to Rome, Venice, Washington, London, Paris, the Bahamas and back to Rome. In the course of the action Gabriel gets close up and personal to the Pope and the US President.. Silva provides us with explosive endings but in the process creates a future threat to world peace to make sure that Gabriel will not go into permanent retirement.
I revisited this book because it the version discounted recently for pocket-change. I am glad I did as it is still one of the best of the series and although it is 8 years since it was first published the content hasn't dated.
