Solid & entertaining follow-up to The Fairy Godmother, but a bit short of its caliber. For one, the ending felt rushed and there wasn't quite enough build-up and lead non for the romantic ending bit (can't really say more without spoilers). Secondly, while I like the unlike heroine(s), the Princess could have used a little bit more pluck and George could have had a bit more story. Overall, I liked the story--the characters were likeable, the land was well depicted, the dialogue was good, the world-building was faithful, and the overall plot was engaging. It just didn't live up to my expectations as a sequel to such a spectacular start or as the sort of stellar read I expect from Mercedes Lackey. I would chalk this up to a one-off, but my experiences with the other 500 kingdoms books have led to my opinion that this is the best of the lot, after the original.

I've beeen a LOONG time Lackey reader started in 1980's with her very first Valdemar series Arrows. Misty is to me a interesting writer, her books are more basic on some levels than many of her counterparts and yet I find I enjoy rereading many of her books far more than some of the more complex writers.(Robert Jordan comes to mind here!)

I tend to prefer the Valdemar series, although not ALL of them mind you, and have not really enjoyed most of her tandem books with other writers.

I picked up Fairy Godmother, the first in this series, because I like writers who play with fairy tales and I enjoyed Lackey's Firebird and Black Swan also because I had heard good things about FG. I enjoyed it emensely and was happy to see there were more 500 Kingdom books.

Unlike several of the folks who complain about the lack of strong romance like in the first book I found this book a delightful read. Lackey has always had some form of romance in most of her book and where folks got the idea the the first book was full of romance I'm not sure as that romance didn't start until more than half way through it.

I like Andie, and I liked all the other characters, Misty is a bit of a sterotype writer, not in a bad way but it can make her books predictable. I did figure several things out fairly soon but it didn't remove any of the enjoyment I had in this book and I look forward to reading the third.
After devouring The Fairy Godmother, I wasted no time in getting my hands on a copy of One Good Knight and I am so glad I did. I was a little worried because the reviews weren't all glowing. The heroine of this story, Andie is a poor little rich girl, the daughter of a Queen. She is undervalued and overlooked, and tends to blend into the background. She enjoys reading, researching, and spending time with six guards, who are the only people she considers friends. One day, the Queen and her 'consort', a wicked wizard, take notice of Andie's smarts and hire her on to provide information to the Palace. Shortly thereafter, a dragon is spotted making havoc in the small Kingdom. While they send for help from another Kingdom (one where Godmother Elena prosides), the palace begins a Lottery of young virgins. If that person's name is picked, they are offered up in sacrifice to the Dragon. Now Andie must find a way to free the Kindgom from the dragons and stop the sacrifices...maybe they will finally get help from a good Knight? You really should pick up this book and see how the story unfolds. There is adventure aplenty. There are also several interesting twists that work well here. The characters are charming and smart. They don't often make silly mistakes for the sake of advancing the plot. The brief visit with Elena and Alexander is exciting. In my opinion this is another five star novel. I have alredy picked up the next in the series.
Wonderful tale taken from Ancient Greece mythology and medieval literature, however, there are a few twists to this tale. The Princess Andromeda must find a way to save her kingdom from the dragon who appears to be demanding a weekly price of a virgin, and when Andie is suddenly chosen to be the virgin sacrifice, she is hoping for a Champion to come to her rescue. However, her Champion is not what she expects, nor are the true circumstances as they appear.

This is a thrilling adventure tale from the Hundred Kingdoms and is well worth reading. You have the usual bad guys, and the heroes (heroines) are a good match against each other, and people who love remakes on their fairy tales will thoroughly enjoy this book
The good? As usual, I really enjoyed the semi-historical and cultural details that Lackey often adds to her fantasy. The story itself starts out well, if a bit cliched intelligent as opposed to decorative, non-traditional princess striving for acceptance from attractive and manipulative, negligent/disappointed/most likely evil royal parent, "suddenly" enjoys complete reversal of fortune with predictably sinister intent. It was generally well written (except for the ending, but I'll get to that in a moment). I think my favorite character was the fox, which is kind of odd considering he's hardly a main character.

The bad The ending. Good lord, the ending. The loose ends that are tied up in a neat little bow are secondary to the main conflict, which is conveniently and very thinly glossed over. As for the "romance" end of it, it's about as rushed, contrived, and predictable as it gets. I literally rolled my eyes, and the obligatory "declarations of love" from the characters were so cheesy they were embarrassing just to read. Aside from that it had the bizarre combination of both being entirely predictable, and coming from practically out of nowhere at the same time.

So basically it's not her worst, but not her best either. The first part, if it takes a bit to get to the actual point, is at least interesting. The end seems like a cop out. A nice bit of fluffy reading when you don't want to think too much, but that's about it.
