The Highwayman H C Bailey 1stworld Library 9781421810423 Books

There are few typos in this Kindle edition but on the whole it is readable w/out significant problems. The main character is a rather odd hero with a very expressionless face and a "stand and deliver" look. The story deals with the hero, a beautiful girl, a jealous villain and a series of plots and maneuvers to put "The Pretender" on the throne after Queen Anne dies. The hero doesn't really care for plots but what with this and that ends up playing a part through the machinations of his manipulative father.
Having given the bare bones of the book I'm afraid I haven't described the book at all...I wouldn't call it entirely stereotypical or predictable. It reminds me a little of R. L. Stevenson.
It's a nice interesting story and I would gladly read another like it.

The Highwayman H C Bailey 1stworld Library 9781421810423 Books Reviews

It is inconceivable that H C Bailey, the weak-minded author of the puerile and unreadable Mr Fortune series, could have written a novel as erudite and well crafted as The Highwayman. I suspect a literary hoax.
I am not really a fan of costume drama and stories told "forsoothly" (as Josephine Tey says). So I was surprised to find that this book, once started, couldn't be put aside. It was a guilty pleasure.
The largely forgotten British mystery writer H.C. Bailey should be better known for creating the most articulate mumbler and most high-spirited grouch in detective fiction, Dr. Reggie Fortune. Here Bailey offers not Mr. Fortune but a pleasantly fluffy historical novel set just before George I came to the English throne. The hero, a carefree, well-educated but penniless young man, gets involved with (1) a wealthy young lady, of course, and (2) the behind-the-scenes struggle over whether George of Hanover or James the Pretender should take the throne. Free on , this one is worth checking out if you like the (also free) collection "Call Mr. Fortune."
Couldn't get into it.
