I read this book as a child and absolutely feel in love with it. Space travel, riding butterflies, and talking snowflakes were more my world than that I lived in. Somehow my original copy disappeared and after remembering the book from time to time I decided it was time to read it again. I was just as pleased with it the second read through as I was the first, and I found more layers and depth to the story from an adult perspective. I highly recommend this book!Tags : Heartlight (Kate Gordon) [T. A. Barron] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. If you look up a list for the top ten worst science fiction books ever, chances are you will see this book on that list.
Somehow, I don't see a great plot here. I almost had to force myself to finish this book. It seems almost directed to little kids in the way that it's about this young girl who's grandfather is this great scientist. When he suddenly disappears, she has to find out where he is and how to save him. Big deal. Compared to other works by T.A. Barron, I'd say that this one is very disappointing. Books by Garth Nix and "A Wrinkle in Time" prove to be much more entertaining than this book.
I am an Episcopal Priest and a Children's Librarian. Heartlight was one of those rare books which absolutely captivated me. It is a moral tale woven from dreams. In our technological, death-denying culture, it is refreshing to read a story which goes beyond technology and does not deny death. Its battle between good and evil is very convincing. If Heartlight owes a great deal to Madeleine L'Engle, Barron does L'Engle credit. It was lovely to meet characters who pray. And the way it ends, well, like the Retriever, it is pure gold. Read it and find the heartlight within your own heart.
If you long for the days of the Heinlein juveniles or the Time series of Madline L'Engle, then this book is for you.
The Earth's sun is dying and has been given just three years to live. A young girl and her grandfather travel to the most spectacular sun in the galaxy to try and find a cure. They travel using butterflies and sillyscience (I mean superscience). Girl and grandfather find themselves on a planet of intelligent polygons in the middle of a battle with a great star eating evil.
A very fun book involving strange aliens, amazing stars and moral lessons for all.
This is a fun story. It’s a little implausible but that’s alright. A story doesn’t have to be realistic or, for that matter, even remotely believable to be entertaining and this book has no shortage of entertainment.
But it does have some problems. Some of the dialogue, especially that of the main character, is a little stiff. She just doesn’t sound like a seventh grade girl and she’s able to reach conclusions that a girl her age wouldn’t have the experience to come to. Also, there are characters who are privy to information that they seem to have no way of knowing.
Overall, I enjoyed the book but I certainly wouldn’t rate it as one of my favorites.
My title explains it all. This book is really stupid. It has almost nothing to do with the significantly better second book (The Ancient One). The concept of this book is so dumb. The writing is juvenile but not in a good way. All of the pseudo-scientific terms and concepts in this book made this book particularly hard to stomach. The main character and her grandfather fly through space on giant butterflies... Gag me with a spoon. I only read this because I recently found out The Ancient One wasn't a stand alone book. Since I loved that book in the 6th grade, I thought I'd give this a shot. I regret that.
Excellent fantasy to relax and enjoy! T.A. Barron has an incredible imagination and captures it so beautifully for us to read!
Outstanding read!! Tx.
